I, Process
This post is long overdue, so apologies to the lovely @Deonvozov for my taking an age to answer her original tumblr post, musing on why so many online producers are willing to talk gear and setup and tech, and are generally far less forthcoming about process, craft and art. So, belatedly, apologetically, here are my personal thoughts on the subject…
I’m a home producer, by which I...

I dreamt last night that sound was a giant block of wet clay, and sampling was like scraping a rough piece off the block. The piece starts off rough and gets progressively moulded into something polished and wonderful.
I think my subconscious is mulling my next phase over in its head. I wonder what it has planned.

I have a strange feeling that the last few weeks working on this track have secretly been a comedic montage scene featuring progressively more chaotic shenanigans entitled “musician struggles to finish track” in someone’s kooky tv show. Starring Jessica Stevenson.

I really couldn’t remember if I’d posted this or not, so here it is - it was the very very first thing I made with the 404. It’s a dobro! And some noises I recorded.
Hook-wriggled
Ho, gentle reader! I’ve been quiet for a while, but I haven’t forgotten you. In truth, I’ve had a few frustrating weeks of music, all my deeds going amiss and that. I suppose it’s to be expected after such a great run with new equipment, but it’s still a shock when there’s inspiration that won’t be captured.
The funds-drain of my hardware binge...

…so is anyone else excited that there is so much free and homegrown music around that is legitimately great stuff? I wonder how we’ll view this period in years to come.

Sunday morning and time to listen back to yesterday’s recording with fresh ears.
Today, I need to take the plunge and start a new set of sounds on the 404. This means backing up and deleting old sounds - it’s the deleting part that takes courage.
What a strange workflow this 404 makes you adopt. But I quite like it. Feels like an old four-track. I wonder what I’ll make next.

River-based Lifeforms*
Valley by anguaji
This is a little snippet of my first-week foolings-around on the SP-404.
The tinny guitar is actually a dobro (hence the tinnyness) recorded into an H2 (though very off-the-cuff and not positioned properly, just a sound test) and the bass is something recorded in the 404 via the internal mic, but I won’t spoil what.
I’m loving the 404 so far, but have had to...

September transitions
September has been pretty packed. I moved house, and caught flu, and pulled my back several times, and wondered why on earth I have so many back issues of Computer Music.
But to be back under the same roof as my Big Brother guitar makes it all worthwhile.
I’ve made a big life change so I can concentrate more on music and - hopefully - not have to be so jam-packed with work hours. Or at...

Influences: Beautiful Wave '74 (Blithe Field)
Latest Influence Album: beautiful wave ‘74 Artist: blithe field Release Date: 21 Mar 10 I love when my geek nature and my music senses intersect smoothly - I first heard the track “Bible School” on the YouTube video At-At Day Afternoon. Some time recently, I revisited this little gem and ran through the YouTube mix for Blithe Field and - frankly - fell in love with the sound....

Work In Progress: August Skies
One Year Ago - The Upbeat Arp [mix 1] by anguaji I found this just now and thought I might share it, it’s something I picked up and put down again after growing bored with it. Apparently a year ago - didn’t feel that long, you know.
I think the history of it was that I was tooling about with the Arp function on my (then) new Akai LPK 25, laid down a nice (yet obvious) arp synth...

B Side: In Time
B Side: In Time by anguaji
I discovered this nanoTrack on my iPod just a couple of days ago - I’ve completely forgotten about it, must have made it at the end of the Go Flake Yourself stint, but I swear, I can’t remember it, can’t remember making it, or arranging it.
Only that I can see my structure types and signature BD sound of the time makes me sure it’s one of my...

By Starlight
By Starlight (pt 1) by anguaji p>
Decided to share a bit of the bright-and-breezy Part One of By Starlight (Which is definitely a Real Thing that I’m working on now - I wonder if I can finish it by the end of the weekend?)
This two-part track started life as some sampled jazz, all from one source, but different feels. The arrangement got split when I laid down an uneasy-sounding and...

By Starlight (pt 2) by anguaji
Had an inspiration to sample some stuff last night -first I thought “Louis Prima” but couldn’t get the hang of it (I’ve never sampled before like this, let alone using the audio editor in Ableton). And then I loaded up a more fluid jazz tune, and it fit together quite nicely. This is unlike anything I’ve ever made before, but I really enjoyed it, so I’ll revisit...

Mysterious podcast theme
Mysterious Podcast Theme by anguaji
Lord knows, I’ve been working on this theme a while - though there was no rush, and the initial process was very quick. I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the production fiddly bits, the instrument I used for the main melody gave me a lot of gip, and the overall sound isn’t as defined as I’d hoped, but I decided not to overthink it and put it to...

In A Chaotic Space. Ish.
I was tooling around with Polygomé hooked up to my Launchpad (using the Monome emulator Nomone, which makes believe your Launchpad is really a Monome, and creates an alternate universe in which you’re rich) and finally got round to hooking it up to AbletonLive. I’ve been working really hard this week and have been a little sleep deprived, which may go some way to explaining why I let...

Low Down
Low Down by anguaji
I’m having a post-holiday mope today, so I made you this low, low groove.
The polls have closed.
Well, yon chappy has received my podcast first-batch of ideas so just waiting now to see what he likes best. They were sent on Sunday night, and boy have *I* forgotten what it’s like to wait for someone’s critique of your output. It happens all the time in my day-job (web developer), but music is a whole other creation.
I gave attention to four ideas over the weekend - I have a list...
Sleep should heal hearts
It started out as a #minecraft suggestion to @Notch, but now I think it’s going to be my next track title: Sleep should heal hearts.
Has a nice ring to it. God bless artistic geekery.
New Project
Wahoo! I got a (very small) commission. I’ve been asked by [CLIENT A] to make a podcast theme for [PODCAST A] lol. I’ll post the real details when it’s done.
So I’m pretty excited to work to a spec again - even if it is quite a vague spec. The nature of the show is kinda talky but the subject matter is games and musics and interviews, so the subject is not really very...
That can be my next tweet
There’s a freaky tweet generator that uses your past input and predicts a you-like set of words. It’s strangely accurate, so I hit the “generate” button a bunch of times and preserved the results here for posterity…
I’ve had some lunch. Bah. Hungry. Dinner time it would be rigid with Google Account cookies.
No it’s something to take it adventurous. -...

Go go gadget remix!
From You (The Lunar Re:Mix) by anguaji
I took the week off so I could chill and make music and finish the @Synoiz remix while I still had the will and it’s turned out better than expected. All I really had to do was mix it, but after a sullen listen on Tuesday, I realised it was never going to sit right, so I replaced the entire rhythm section, hit on some really nice touches, and mixed...

Chiptune Doodling #1
A good while ago, I spent a Friday evening catching up with this great chiptune workshop by @animalstyle. It’s a great video - graciously taped - and I was pretty inspired (at the time, there weren’t many chiptune learning resources around other than a few here-and-there tutorials by Nullsleep and Sabrepulse*).
So I took the new techniques I learned and popped them in this doodle,...
#noodling #korginator (a soundcloud set)
#noodling #korginator by anguaji
In November 2010, I decided to make a mini-project out of a week of noodling on my new Kaossilator (so I could get the feel of it). Here’s the results, finally uploaded to soundcloud for a more permanent record.

Fooling Around
I’m trying to find a good fit for my music blog/music site. I’ve loved blogger for a good while, but I think Tumblr may be the way forward… Liking it so far, and the import worked nice and clean.
The idea is to group my music-related blogging antics and my noodles and my occasional completed tracks and news all together. This may or may not work.
I’m being lazy, as...

Work In Progress: A Lunar Remix Saga
I’ve been working on a remix for my good friend @Synoiz. It’s taken a year - of course, had it really taken a year, I would have lost my job, and then my flat, and any semblance of self-respect I had for myself as a working musician. Really, I’d say it’s probably taken about a few weeks (a month at most) of proper time, but I’ve had to space it out so much because...

What's that sound?
Do your ears deceive you? Of course not. And once again, you’ve made an ass of yourself. Clickering the play button below will tune you very briefly into the sounds of me plugging my strat into a recording doo-wingey for a change. With all this synthing over the coldmas, it’s easy for me to forget that I’m a guitarist. Silly old me. What you hear is my Good Old Strat (pictured)...

Go Flake Yourself
So, I was pretty close-lipped about turning my funny little #Nanonoodles into a micro-ep, because to be honest, I’m a little bit bashful about such highfalutin ideas, being much more prone to riff-raffery myself. But even I had to admit that after I’d made the first 2 tracks and was halfway through the third, there was already a sense of a “made thing” about the set. To my...
